About mARTinez GALLERY

In May 2007, several local artists from the Martinez Arts Association formed a cooperative to open an art gallery in the heart of downtown Martinez, housed in the historic Sharkey Building adjacent to the County Courthouse. Anyone visiting the gallery will see a variety of artworks -- from painting, photography and ceramics to woodworking, jewelry and fabric art -- and will have the opportunity to meet and chat with one of the artists, as the gallery is staffed by those who exhibit their work.

The gallery not only showcases the work of experienced artists, but benefits developing artists as well. A portion of all proceeds from sales goes toward a scholarship fund to support young students of the arts.

Gallery artists have been vetted by a jury of their peers. Some of the exhibitors are new to the gallery world; many others have impressive resumes that include displays at commercial galleries, fairs and shows throughout the Bay Area and beyond.

Every two months an open-house reception is held to showcase new pieces and provides a meet-and-greet opportunity with Martinez artists. These Friday evening events are always free and open to the public - no invitation needed.

As the exhibits change, visitors are welcome to come in often to see what's new. If you saw a piece that piqued your interest but it is no longer exhibited, feel free to ask the artist on duty at the time to help you contact the artist in question. If the piece has not been sold, most artists would be happy, with no obligation for purchase, to arrange for you to see the piece(s) again.

The Martinez Arts Association values its community commitment and involvement. The association sponsors frequent exhibits to showcase the talents of children and teenagers, troubled youth and special-education adults. Both as individuals and as a group, Arts Association members participate in community fund-raisers and truly enjoy sharing their art experience with the community and beyond.
