9th annual SWAN Day celebration to be held in Martinez

MARTINEZ, CA – SWAN DAY (Support Women Artists Now Day) – is an international holiday celebrating the creative power of women all over the world.  The 9th annual SWAN DAY celebration in Martinez is being held on Saturday, April 9, 2016.

The Martinez Arts Association has brought this international holiday close to home in downtown Martinez and has been celebrating for the past 8 years. With the support of the City of Martinez and local artists we have promoted the concept of celebrating all forms of art including visual & performing arts.  This event is FREE and we invite all artists and lovers of the arts to join in the celebration of this amazing collaboration of artists.

This celebration will be held from 10 to 4 pm, in the Old Train Depot parking lot at the end of Ferry Street.

About MAA

Founded in 1968 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, the Martinez Arts Association (MAA) participates in many community events throughout the year. Our goal is to encourage art culture and education for our youth. We coordinate and sponsor art-related events such as, ‘SWAN Day’ (Support Women Artists Now) in March, ‘Open Studios’ in May, ‘Art in the Park’ in August, and the ‘Holiday Boutique’ in December.

From the proceeds of the association’s fund-raising, the MAA is able to provide scholarships to local graduating seniors to encourage their artistic endeavors. Also, in response to budgetary cutbacks to our public schools, the MAA offers grant funding to teachers for purchasing art supplies for their students.

The association’s greatest annual fund-raiser, ‘Art in the Park with Live Music’, is held the third Sunday in August. This event is normally held at Susana Street Park in downtown Martinez.

In May 2007, the MAA opened a co-operative art gallery. The Martinez Gallery is located at 610 Court Street and participates in events organized by Main Street Martinez. The gallery’s operating hours are from Monday – Saturday 11 am to 3 pm.  Every 2 months, the artists of the gallery rotate their exhibit with a new theme. Fine art, jewelry, glassware, and assorted gift items are for sale at the gallery with a portion of the proceeds donated toward the MAA’s art grant program.


 

2015 Arts Grants Awards

This year the Martinez Arts Association awarded $3000 in grants to teachers to fund art projects in their classrooms.
Twenty-four teachers requested money for art materials to support projects such as sand painting, mirror tiles, pillow making, scrap booking, making sculptures of Famous Americans, building a mission, making prints, making Native American pots, creating portfolios, and learning art techniques from DVDs. A photo class at Alhambra High School will use their funds for a field trip to San Francisco for “Art Talk and Walk” along Market St.
MAA donates 15% of its sales from the Gallery at 610 Court St. toward these grants.
